- Processes, puts into public debate and proposes specific environmental policies.
- Proposes measures, methods and actions to coordinate the activity of the competent bodies in the field of the environment.
- Collects, manages and processes data from databases and environmental information networks.
- Supports MEEN to meet the country's obligations to the European Environment Agency.
- Monitors and evaluates the implementation of international conventions and community environmental legislation.
- Draws up an annual report assessing the state of the country's environment and estimates environmental policy objectives, guidelines and measures.
- Elaborates and proposes medium-term and long-term action programs for the protection of the environment and sustainable development and undertakes the monitoring and evaluation of their implementation.
- Provides scientific and technical support to MEEN, as well as other competent Ministries, in taking the necessary measures and for the elaboration and implementation of plans, programs and actions required by national, European and international law, as well as drafting the reports prescribed by Community directives and regulations on the environment.
- Supports the relevant public bodies in the formulation, promotion and implementation of international cooperation on environment and sustainable development.
- Prepares and recommends environmental precautionary measures.
- Undertakes the preparation or implementation of national or European programs and actions for the environment and sustainable development.
- Organizes pilot training and educational programmes on environment and sustainable development as well as conferences, workshops, training seminars and other informative events.
- Undertakes publishing activity in paper or electronic form, as well as other related promotional or informational activities.
- Undertakes and delegates the execution of projects, the preparation of studies and the general provision of services that promote its founding purposes.
